Anne Lindberg - ellipse (2023)
Laminated mirror and glass.
Commissioned by NYU Langone Art Program, ellipse is a site-specific mural by artist Anne Lindberg, created for the former Citicorp Center building, a New York City Landmark. Spanning five floors, the artwork is located within a health facility dedicated to women’s health.
Lindberg’s design features a series of vertical lines in varying colors and intensities, unified by an oval—a shape derived from the Latin word ovum, meaning egg. Symbolizing rebirth, fertility, the cyclical nature of life, and a sense of permanence, the oval anchors the composition. A mirrored background adds depth and shimmer, allowing passersby to catch glimpses of themselves, visually connecting them to both the mural and its meaning.

Anne Lindberg is a multidisciplinary artist known for her intricate mixed-media drawings, site-specific permanent works, and immersive installations. Working meticulously line by line, she creates textured, abstract compositions that reflect her sensory experiences of the world. Her practice is deeply rooted in fiber art, drawing inspiration from textiles and the neurological and physiological networks of the human body. Her work often explores the emotional and physical impact of color, often using hues like green to evoke nature, renewal, and tranquility. Through her labor-intensive process, Lindberg expands upon traditional fiber arts, blurring the boundaries between drawing, sculpture, and installation. Lindberg’s site-specific installations or three dimensional drawings, such as passage for the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts, engage directly with architectural spaces, transforming them into dynamic, immersive environments. She hand-stretches colorful thread into volumetric drawings that shift with the viewer’s movement, evoking systems like heartbeat, respiration, and neural pathways. Lindberg is a graduate of the Cranbrook Academy of Art’s renowned fiber program. She lives and works in Upstate New York.
